The IWC Flieger or what we simply know as the Pilot goes all the way back in the 1940s with their infamous Mark XI. Under the helm of Gunther Blümlein, IWC made the iconic Flieger available to the general public.
The philosophy of IWC in the early 1990s was to make complications more accessible. With helps from talented watchmakers of the time ; Giulio Papi, Dominic Renaud, Kurt Klaus and Richard Habring, IWC created many impressive timepieces such as the Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph, il Destriero Scafusia and the Pilot Doppelchronograph.
The reference 3713 Pilot Doppelchronograph succeeded the reference 3711 with a modern update that is the use of sapphire crystal for better wearability and durability.
In 1997, IWC introduced the Japan Limited Edition of the reference 3713, 130 piece in Stainless Steel and 5 piece in Platinum.
This Stainless Steel version has a white dial with dark blue subdials and applied numerals paired with a set of tritium filled hands as well as eye catching chronograph hands in red and blue. Interestingly it also has the vintage style IWC signature on the dial.
Powering the IWC 3713 is the Cal. 79230 that is based on a Valjoux 7750 with a modular split-second chronograph mechanism designed by Richard Habring. He managed to simplified a highly complex mechanism to create the world’s first serially produced split-second chronograph movement.
