The reference 3940, introduced in 1985 in the midst of the quartz crisis, was the reference that kickstarted the production of complicated timepieces by Patek Philippe. It is an iconic and important reference and it was produced between 1985-2007. The former CEO of Patek Philippe, Philippe Stern has been photographed in many occasions wearing the 3940.
This 3940 has a slim Calatrava style case with 36mm diameter with 8mm thickness in yellow gold.
This example is the first series of the reference 3940. It has some distinct features on the dial that makes it stands out to the later series. It has sunken registers at 3 and 9 displaying the month with leap year and the day of the week with 24 hour indicator respectively. It also has a smaller “Patek Philippe Geneve” print that gives it a more vintage appeal.
The 3940 is powered by the Cal. 240Q automatic movement with a 22K gold micro-rotor. This ultra-thin movement measures 3.75mm thick that is beautifully hand-finished.
