The IWC Flieger or what we simply know as the Pilot goes all the way back in the 1940s with their infamous Mark XI. Under the helm of Gunther Blümlein, IWC made the iconic Flieger available to the general public.
The philosophy of IWC in the early 1990s was to make complications more accessible. With helps from talented watchmakers of the time ; Giulio Papi, Dominic Renaud, Kurt Klaus and Richard Habring, IWC created many impressive timepieces such as the Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph, il Destriero Scafusia and the Pilot Doppelchronograph.
In 1994, IWC introduced the Fliegerchronograph - or more simply known as the Pilot Chronograph. They introduced both Stainless Steel version and this Ceramic version. It was an early use of ceramic case but it was not the first one. The reference 3705 was produced between 1994-1998.
It has a 39mm ceramic case made of Zirconium Oxide (ZrO2) with engraved Stainless Steel case back. It has just under 14.6 mm in thickness.
The dial is matte black with large, white-painted Arabic numerals with an outer minute track. It features luminous triangle at 12 and rectangular luminous blocks at 3, 6 and 9. It has three counter at 6, 9 and 12 and a day and date window at 3.
It is powered by the Cal. 7922 self-winding movement based on the workhorse Valjoux Cal. 7750. It also features a soft-iron inner case to protect the movement against magnetic fields.
