The Royal Oak Offshore, launched at the Basel Fair in 1993, was born to rejuvenate the Royal Oak collection. It was outrageous at the time because of the size of the watch, 42mm in diameter and 14mm thickness - keep in mind that the average size of mens' watches was around 36mm.
Towards the end of the 1990s, Audemars Piguet started collaborating with famous personalities to make limited edition version of the Royal Oak Offshore. These limited edition pieces became a medium for AP to experiment with design and materials.
Rubens Barrichello, a highly decorated and one of the most successful Brazilian Formula 1 driver, started a partnership with Audemars Piguet as their ambassador in 2005. It started with a 150 piece limited edition in 2005 and followed up by the second edition the Rubens Barrihcello II in 2006. It was one of if not the most sought after timepiece at the time.
The RB II was made in 3 different material, 1000 piece in Titanium, 500 piece in 18K Rose Gold, and 150 piece in Platinum. It measures at 42mm with a detailing inspired from Formula One race car. The bezel is made of ceramic with exposed hex screws.
The dial is partially openwork with a "Mega Tapisserie Racing" pattern and it features blue, yellow and green sub dial hands the represent the Brazilian flag.
The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Rubens Barrichello II is powered by the Cal. 2326/2840 self-winding movement with chronograph module.
