The Royal Oak Offshore, launched at the Basel Fair in 1993, was born to rejuvenate the Royal Oak collection. It was outrageous at the time because of the size of the watch, 42mm in diameter and 14mm thickness - keep in mind that the average size of mens' watches was around 36mm.

Towards the end of the 1990s, Audemars Piguet started collaborating with famous personalities to make limited edition version of the Royal Oak Offshore. These limited edition pieces became a medium for AP to experiment with design and materials.

In 2004, AP announced the appointment of Juan Pablo Montoya as their ambassador and created a limited edition Royal Oak Offshore as an homage to Montoya. They made three different version, 1000 pieces in Titanium, 500 pieces in Rose Gold and 100 pieces in Platinum.

It has a 44mm titanium case with a styling that is very aggressive and in many ways inspired by motorsport. The bezel is made of Carbon Fiber secured by 8 hexagonal screws, pedal like chronograph pushers, the dial has a "Grande Tapisserie" pattern with a subtle checkered flag at the center, and the clutch disk inspired automatic rotor.

The piece that we have here is an extremely rare Prototype piece, numbered 000/000 in Titanium. And what makes it unique is that it has the blue dial of the Platinum version as opposed to the usual white dial.
