When it was first introduced in 2009, the Zeitwerk was groundbreaking. It was the first wristwatch with a mechanical digital hour and minute display. It was not a brand new concept as it goes back to the 19th century by Josef Pallweber an Austrian watchmaker who incensed his creation to some manufactures, most notably IWC in their pocket watches.
The challenge in creating the movement is to power 1608 instantaneous jumps in 24 hours for its three discs, one disc for the hour and two discs for the minute, precisely. So the Zeitwerk carries the thickest mainspring the manufacture produces and it has a remontoire that delivers a constant force for equal torque to power the jump.
The Zeitwerk Honey Gold “Lumen” was launched at the end of 2021 as a 200 piece limited edition. The Lumen has a tinted sapphire crystal dial that let us have a peek at the discs in action plus a special effect with luminous material applied numerals on the discs.
It is encased in a 41.9mm diameter Honey Gold case, a special alloy Lange developed and used for some of their special pieces.
And it is powered by the cal. 043.9 that is an improved version from the original Zeitwerk movement with a longer 72 hour power reserve and a button to advance the hour independently. It is extremely complex with 462 parts that are finished to the highest level and the highlight on it is the filigreed remontoire bridge shaped like an anchor.
